On Saturday @ the Foston’s party, I believe I mentioned there was a band. I really BAD, FUNKY-shut-the-place-down band. DysFUNKtion. Well, my lady didn’t have the good fortune to hear them blow on Saturday, so we actually went to check them out @ cafewha? This evening. The pic above is Cheryl, one of the singers in performance (that was on Saturday). But she was in prime form this evening as well. And the wings and the mozarella sticks weren’t shabby either. Good times.

This Saturday, I had the privilege and honor of shooting the Foston’s 10th Wedding Anniversary @ Maggiano’s. Not only was it classy, but they had a grand time in the place. And Dys’FUNK’tion (the band).. absolutely shut it down. It was certainly a privilege and a pleasure. You can check out some of the photos here and there.

Engaged.

Because I ain’t even told EVERYBODY yet, but I’m posting this on my blog.. and I make NO apology for it.. on this afternoon I asked a certain lady to marry me… She decided to say yes. Just figured I’d share.

Cooking!

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Isn’t quite fundamental, but it should be. And where better to start with a cast iron pan? The photo to the side here is one of several shots I came up with working on Lighting 102. You can find details here.

Yea, I could definitely get a kick out of the still life, commercial, kitchen work, but that’s a long ways off. We focus on weddings and special events now.

Now we just have to get that on the business card so EVERYBODY else knows. But I have my leisure, and I will do what I will. Because I can. Yea. That’s the ticket!

I’m off to some good cooking matter of fact. Shooting a couple’s 10th anniversary party tomorrow evening, and they’re having a get together to night for some of their out-of-town guests.

And that means I get to have fish and grits (y’all don’t know about the south!) and take pictures. Does it get much better than that on a Friday? We’ll see. Pictures from tonight later tonight.

Has great group shots. Not to mention stellar subjects. Of the ones I looked at, this was my favorite. I think it’s because Don, Sam, & Ed were in it (I mean come on, the Goat, the Negotiator, and Ed transformationally beefing up for American History X—before Will did it? Not to mention they don’t get much shine), but all of ‘em are dope (of course, that’s why they’re having their picture taken). But she shot ‘em, and that’s doper (yes. I do “-er”, the qualitative modifier of “e”). Here are the rest of her shots. Lotta big names, and names that grew since those photos were taken. Posterity is a beautiful thing. Thanks to Strobist for the sharing the wonderful group shot resource (cue sinister laugh look of utter gratitude).

Crazy thing though: from what I heard, this photo more than likely took hours and may not have had all folks in at all times, etc. Guess that’s the celebrity politic. I should try to, uh, propose that sort of thing.

‘Um yea, lay on the ground here in front of this chair and look serious…in fact I’m going to need two of you in those nice designer suits and one of you in those evening gowns to sit on the ground also, right here in the front just before that tire track, but not in it…’

We’re just gonna wait on that one. That’s enough rambling from this corner. Back to the books, and then to bed.

Idling

So I didn’t go to sleep last night, and left the house @ 5:30 this morning to go get some soft light shots around the way before crashing back in my bed at about 6:30-6:45. So, therefore, after waking up about 11:45 and getting situated by 12:45 (yea, sometimes it takes a while), I successfully sat at my workstation to commence doing absolutely nothing productive this morning. And Lord knows, there’s much to be edited.

Guess I’ve been reading The Now Habit for a reason, now, eh?

Strobist info: No lights on the first shot, just a camera, a tripod & 1/3 sec @ f/8.0. For the second, I had a 580ex camera left @ 1/16 power, 1/50 sec @ f/8.0. Processed to look good just for you in Lightroom.

Focus

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

At the Onelight Workshop in Boston, Zack touched on how Mike Colón (not even going to dispense with how many keystroke attempts it took for me to figure out how to get the accent—I’m particular like that) referred to his career in terms of an hour glass; the idea that he began by doing many things, decided to focus on one thing and become a master of it and how that decision in turn opened up a variety of options to diversify yet again later in his career.

I think it’s about that time to focus. So I’m resolving to restrict my work for the present to weddings and special events. Short of affiliation with those two divisions, everything else can wait.

Oh, and for those wondering, the Onelight workshop was unquestionably a good look. Zack is definitely a down to earth guy, and he knows light, and teaches it well. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t note that Zack too also is focused. Mr. Rock Photographer himself. Zack, thanks to you, I’m jonesing for one of those Westcott Apollo Softboxes you got there. Between that and that 10º grid spot… Lotta Cherrios there.

Welcome to the Beginning.

Welcome to where it all began. But I should probably let you know that this is, in fact, the beginning.

Just to bring you up to speed, this marks the second time I’ve endeavored to hold down a blog… This time, I’m holding it for better or for worse, through sickness—yea you get the picture. The re-introduction of what I’m doing with myself has been long overdue.

It begins now. Thanks for watching.
